About me
Hello. I’m an economics lecturer in NUI Galway. I work in the areas of historical public finances, the political economy of institutions and innovation policy. I teach a range of undergrad and postgrad courses, but especially now in the area of “Ireland in the Global Economy”, and also I have a particular interest in the development of undergraduate student research projects in economics.
I’m currently programme director of the Higher Diploma in Economic Science.
I’m at NUI Galway since 1994, joining what was then the department of economics, and which is now a constituent discipine of the J. E. Cairnes School of Business & Economics. From 2002 to 2006 I was Director of the Centre for Innovation and Structural Change (CISC), a multidisciplinary research centre at NUI Galway.
Ancient history
I was student (undergrad and postgrad) at Trinity College Dublin (PhD 1996). While there, I was Auditor of the College Historical Society the debating society founded in 1770, and known as ‘the Hist’. I was a gold and silver medallist of the Society and a member of the winning team of Irish Times student debating competition.
